KitchenAid stand mixers would break down every once in a while. Although it would frighten you, the good news is you can do many KitchenAid repairs at home.
You can disassemble your stand mixer and solve the problems with simple tools.
But how do you take apart a KitchenAid mixer? When should you disassemble your stand mixer? Read on.
9 Easy Steps To Take Apart A Kitchenaid Mixer
1. Prepare The Tools
No matter what problem your KitchenAid Classic mixer encounters, the first thing you have to do is to prepare the necessary tools. Since you can repair most problems at home, the tools needed are simple.
Here are some of the tools you will need:
- Flat head screwdriver
- Philips screwdriver
- Small hammer
- Pliers
- Pin punch
- Putty knife
2. Remove the Back Cover of the Mixer
Disassembling a KitchenAid Classic mixer can be messy after taking it apart. So to keep your kitchen table from all the mess, you need to put some newspapers on top of the table.
Then put on thin disposable gloves before you start to remove the back cover of the mixer. Locate the one screw on top holding the back motor housing cover in place and unscrew it.
3. Remove the Metal Band
The next thing to remove is the metal band around the motor housing cover. This metal band decorates the mixer, catches leaking grease, and helps seal the gearbox.
Unscrewing two screws will release the metal band of the motor housing cover. But if it won’t slide off, you can use a screwdriver and lightly tap it away.
4. Pull Out the Planetary using Hammer & Pin Punch
But before you can take the top of the motor housing cover, you still need to remove the planetary gear. The planetary cover is easy to pry off, but you must do it gently and avoid scratching it using a flathead screwdriver.
Then remove the roll pin by lightly tapping it using a hammer and a pin punch.
5. Take Off The Seven Screws
After that, you can now remove the drip ring from the KitchenAid Classic mixer. It would lead you to remove the planetary gear easily. You have to pry it using a couple of screwdrivers and then pull the rest of the way using your hands.
There would be seven screws underneath. Remove the five screws first to separate the motor from the stand mixer, then take off the remaining two.
6. Take Note of the Locking Mechanism
As you keep disassembling the motor housing cover, you must remember to arrange the parts based on how you remove them from the base. It would save you time once you start assembling your mixer.
For instance, there could be a safety locking mechanism on one of the screws underneath, and you need to remember where to put it back later.
7. Remove the Two Screws At the Other End
Now that you are done taking apart the front part of the motor housing cover, it’s time to look at the rear cover of your machine. There are two motor housing screws at the other end for you to remove.
But again, you need to arrange it properly so you would not interchange these back motor housing screws with those from the front.
8. Unclip the Power Cord
Before you lift the top half of your KitchenAid Classic mixer, you have to unclip its power cord from the notch at the rear. You can do it by hand as it simply pulls out of the machine and ensures it won’t get in the way.
Its location may be different from other models, and it can be on the bottom of the mixer.
9. Lift the Top Half of the Mixer
After taking apart the motor housing cover, you can remove the top of the machine. This part would have many gears and motors that make your mixer work for you on many occasions.
There are still parts on the mixer’s base, but now you can repair your machine or do a preventive cleaning.
